What each tool is built for
SpyFu's strength is competitor intelligence: organic keywords, Google Ads history and backlinks of other domains. SE Ranking covers that research too, then adds the operational side: daily rank tracking, a website audit of up to 250,000 pages per month on Core, reporting and AI search tracking.
Rank tracking
SpyFu tracks rankings weekly on Basic. SE Ranking tracks 2,000 keywords daily on Core. For client work where daily movements matter, SE Ranking is the stronger tracker.
Where SpyFu is stronger
Price and paid-search history. At $39, SpyFu is the cheapest way in this comparison to see competitors' Google Ads keywords over time, which is valuable for PPC managers.
Weaknesses of each
- SpyFu: weekly tracking on Basic and limited data rows (10k) on the entry plan.
- SE Ranking: higher entry price; 1 manager seat on Core.
Typical workflows
A PPC manager uses SpyFu to see which keywords a rival has bid on for years and which ad copy it kept running, then builds campaigns from that history. An SEO consultant uses SE Ranking to add clients as projects, track their keywords every day, audit their sites and send monthly reports. The overlap is competitor keyword research, which both tools cover; everything after the research step is where SE Ranking does more.
